B2 First Speaking Question
Why might the people have chosen these forms of transport?
Sample Answer
1 minute to compare and contrast the two pictures as well as answer the question.
In the first picture there are some air stewards, well, an air steward and stewardess serving a couple some drinks on a plane. And so these passengers may well have chosen that form of transport because it’s faster and also more relaxing. Whereas those in the second picture who look as if they on some kind of motorcycling holiday on some quite narrow country roads must, in my opinion, have chosen that form of transport because it’s not relaxing. It taxes them and makes them concentrate on the journey. There’s only the two of them in the countryside side which will be much different from all the passengers on the plane. The passengers on the plane will also be able to get served drinks while the two in the countryside will need to stop their journey.

B2 First Speaking Analysis
This is my opinion of the above answer. The answer was given as in a test, with minimal preparation time.
This way of answering is the most common. talk about one picture, then talk about the other. If you have time, then talk about them both. There are pitfalls doing it this way, the biggest one being that it is really easy to run out of time.
The questions were answered immediately and clearly, with the answer finishing with comparisons.
Good use of phrases, such as ‘may well have’, ‘look as if’ and ‘some kind of’ etc to show doubt.
Good use of comparative words, such as ‘whereas’ and ‘while’
Could have used more lesser-known vocabulary
Lesser-Known Vocabulary
- air stewards – staff on a plane who look after the passengers
- passengers – people who are travelling by a means of transport, but not driving
- quite narrow – not very wide
- taxes – to demand a lot from
- concentrate – to think hard about something
